Tech 101
Sythetic or Conventional?

What is the Difference between synthetic oil and conventional motor oil? Motor oil is designed to serve many different purposes within an engine. While the primary function is to simply lubricate all the moving parts and provide protection from wear and corrosion, it also is intended to keep the engine cool and free from small pieces of debris.

  • Conventional motor oils are made from crude oil which has been pumped from the ground and then processed in a refinery to create a base oil. Additives are then mixed into the base oil to change the viscosity, protection properties and heat breakdown levels of the oil.

  • Synthetic oil is also created in a similar manner. The difference lies in the fact that synthetic motor oils are created utilizing a specially "synthesized" base oil where the size of the oil molecules are all of an ideal weight and of consistent size. This means that the synthetic oil is designed with improved lubricating properties and enhanced viscosity to provide superior protection from engine wear, reduced heat breakdown volatility for decreased oil consumption, improved fuel mileage, easier cold engine starting, and a reduction in engine deposits.

Deciding whether it is best to use Synthetic or Conventional. It is always best to bear in mind the age of the vehicle as problems and oil leaks can occur when switching to a fully synthetic oil with an old engine. This is because there can be a build-up of waxes and sludge left by conventional oils. This may cause the detergents in the synthetic oil to break down and clean-up this protective build-up which is maintaining the seal. This often will then result in oil leaking through the engine seals as the oil thins when it gets to operating temp.

We offer a full line of Conventional and Screamin' Eagle Synthetic Oils. Please stop by or give us a call for help with the right thing for Your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle.

Always Remember here at RMHD we offer as a courtesy to you 10% Over Cost OEM Tires Everyday. Have any questions please give us a call 252.446.7292.

Nitrogen Website / click here!

Nitrogen in tires is becoming a popular replacement for standard air. Nitrogen is all around us... the air we breathe is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and the rest is small amounts of other gasses. When it comes to tire inflation, nitrogen has many advantages over oxygen. With nitrogen tire inflation, improvements can be noted in a vehicle's handling, fuel efficiency and tire life through better tire pressure retention, improved fuel economy and cooler running tire temperatures. Here at the Rocky Mount Harley Davidson our goal is to provide Riders, information about the benefits of using nitrogen in tires. We offer a vacuum and Nitrogen fill for $7.00 per tire!

Are you one of the 85% of Americans who doesn't regularly check tire pressure? If so you need nitrogen.

Who Else Is Using Nitrogen? NASCAR - NASCAR teams use nitrogen because it allows them to more accurately predict tire pressure fluctuation. Nitrogen fluctuates with temperature change, but it does so less than when water vapor is present. Read On... In addition, higher nitrogen levels eliminate the explosive properties of oxygen (oxygen loses its explosive properties at around 9% or less) NASCAR uses bottled nitrogen for portability. The bottles are delivered to the track by Praxair. We also use Bottled Nitrogen here a RMHD!

AMSOIL MCV is the result of extensive research, and it is specially formulated to excel in all areas unique to motorcycles, including high temperatures of air-cooled engines such as Harley Davidson® V-Twin, wet clutch lubrication, extreme pressure regions of gears and chains and rust common to short trips and storage.

AMSOIL MCV is multi-functional and fulfills the requirements of both domestic and foreign motorcycles. It outperforms other conventional and synthetic motorcycle oil.

AMSOIL, the leader in synthetic lubrication, produced the world’s first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL The First in Synthetics® to do the best job protecting your motorcycle.

Reduces Friction, Heat and Wear
In high heat conditions, engine protection is not sacrificed with AMSOIL
Synthetic Motorcycle Oil. It has exceptional
high-temperature film strength and contains a heavy treatment of anti-wear additives to reduce wear regardless of the
operating conditions. AMSOIL 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil is thermally (heat) stable and contains maximum levels of oxidation inhibitor additives. It is extremely resistant to breakdown and engineered to prevent damaging sludge and
carbon deposits for superior engine cleanliness.

Provides Extreme Pressure Quality Protection for Gears and Chains
With AMSOIL MCV, there is no need for separate transmission or primary chaincase lubricants. It is absolutely shear stable and will not thin out from mechanical activity. AMSOIL MCV performs like a gear lube without the negative effects of extreme pressure additives. In the FZG gear test, AMSOIL MCV achieved a perfect score with a “zero” wear rating (see photo below).
